Burner Placement
Most kilns outside of an industry setting are of open port design. This simply means the burner has air flowing around it into the kiln. The burner and it's pilot assembly must be within the perimeter of the port and set back from the outside wall. A burner that is too far into the kiln will have a shortened nozzle life and trouble with pilot flames being unstable. A port that is too small in relation to the burner and pilot assembly will have the same problems. An open port design needs to have secondary air entrained around the nozzle and into the kiln. A tapered (15°) entrance port is preferred but not at all necessary.
